Ozone Dentistry

Holistic, biological dentistry is a marriage of the best that modern clinical dentistry has to offer and natural therapies that support the body’s own self-healing abilities. Perhaps no other therapeutic agent embodies both of these quite as well as ozone.

What is Ozone Therapy?

Ozone therapy is a safe, non-toxic treatment that harnesses the oxidizing power of ozone to stimulate your body’s natural self-healing abilities.

And just what is ozone? It’s a colorless gas made up of three oxygen atoms, which is why you’ll often see it referred to as O3. That third oxygen atom in each molecule of ozone makes it a powerful oxidizing agent.

Ozone can also be administered through water or oil, as well as in its simple gaseous form.

How Ozone Therapy Promotes Healing

Ozone has a number of healing properties when used at specific concentrations and volumes:

  • Ozone is antibacterial and antiviral. It destroys bacteria, viruses, and fungi by rupturing their cell membranes. This helps fight infection.
  • Ozone improves circulation and oxygen delivery. It causes the release of nitric oxide, which dilates blood vessels and improves blood flow. More oxygen reaches tissues, promoting healing.
  • Ozone reduces inflammation and relieves pain by inhibiting the release of pro-inflammatory cytokines. This provides pain-relieving effects.
  • Ozone accelerates healing. By improving oxygen levels in tissues, ozone speeds up the healing process following illness or injury.

Ozone Applications in Our Dental Office

Here are just some of the ways we use ozone here at Wayne Family Dental:

  • Disinfecting areas of the mouth before dental procedures.
  • Killing bacteria associated with tooth decay and gum disease.
  • Promoting healing and reducing pain and inflammation after dental surgery.
  • Accelerating healing of mouth or canker sores.
  • Treating abscesses.
  • Disinfecting and treating exposed tooth roots and gums.

Because all the water we use in our treatment rooms is ozonated, as well, ozone helps with infection control in every procedure we do. It also helps keep our water lines pristine, free from any bacterial or fungal build up.

If you have any questions about ozone therapy and how it may benefit your oral health, please don’t hesitate to ask us during your next appointment. We look forward to serving all your holistic dental needs.
