Holistic Dentistry at Wayne Family Dentistry

Here at Wayne Family Dentistry, we practice holistic and biological dentistry.

Our approach recognizes the intricate link between oral health and overall well-being. We understand the potential impact of dental treatments on the body as a whole. Above all, we focus on treating the whole person.

Biological Dentistry Starts with Prevention

Dr. James Choe firmly believes in the philosophy of “less dentistry is best dentistry.” So we prioritize prevention to help you maintain a healthy smile for a lifetime.

Regular brushing, flossing, and professional cleanings are essential parts of the preventive care we provide. We also promote a healthy lifestyle that includes proper nutrition, exercise, sleep, stress management, and more.

Diet plays a fundamental role in our approach, informed by the work of influential researchers such as Dr. Weston Price, Dr. Francis Pottenger, and Dr. Melvin Page, who all demonstrated how diet affects the development and health of the teeth and jaws. Dr. Choe adheres to the principles of the Wise Traditions diet advocated by the Weston A. Price Foundation.

Another important tool is our phase contrast microscope, which we use to observe a small sample of biofilm (plaque) from your mouth to determine what level of treatment is appropriate. Our Oral Disinfection Protocol is customized for you and every other patient we see.

We give you a personalized home care program, as well, including specific products and techniques to maintain a healthy oral environment. The microscope then lets us track your progress through future visits to ensure stability.

Dental Health Is About More Than Teeth

Our biological approach means that we take a comprehensive approach to assessing oral health. We consider factors such as diet, stress, and overall body balance when diagnosing and treating dental issues. We examine both physical and energetic influences, as well.

Just as oral health problems can manifest in other parts of the body, conditions in the mouth can be influenced by systemic conditions.

Instead of merely treating symptoms, we focus on identifying the root causes of any dental problems you may be having. By treating the underlying causes, we can alleviate symptoms and, more importantly, guide you towards a future of optimal oral and overall health.

A Minimally Invasive, Biocompatible Approach

When dental problems do arise, we prioritize conservative and minimally invasive treatment options.

We avoid using toxic materials, choosing biocompatible alternatives instead. Our office is fluoride-free, mercury-free, and mercury-safe. We never place “silver” mercury amalgam fillings. If these fillings need to be replaced – whether due to age or patient choice – we follow the strict safety protocols established by the International Academy of Oral Medicine & Toxicology (IAOMT) to protect our patients, ourselves, and the environment. Dr. Choe is certified in the IAOMT’s Safe Mercury Amalgam Removal Technique, or SMART.

For dental restorations or replacements, we prefer to use composite and ceramic materials such as zirconia and porcelain. If there are any concerns regarding sensitivity, we can conduct biocompatibility testing to ensure we select only those that are a good match to your unique biochemistry.

Our biocompatible approach also involves the use of advanced tools such as ozone, lasers, and platelet-rich fibrin (PRF) – tools that support optimal healing by stimulating your body’s natural healing abilities

Addressing Barriers to Optimal Mouth/Body Health

We recognize that there are ways in which past dental work may actually compromise your overall health. These include issues such as mercury release from old amalgam fillings, residual infections in root canal-treated teeth, and the hidden infections commonly called “cavitations.”

Toxins from such sources can spread throughout the body, contributing to a wide range of systemic health problems, including cardiometabolic, neurological, and autoimmune conditions. Removing both the sources of toxins and the toxins themselves is a crucial step towards healing.

We are more than happy to collaborate and coordinate your care with naturopathic or integrative physicians, acupuncturists, chiropractors, or any other healing professionals who are involved in your treatment.

Another common barrier to oral and overall health is an underdeveloped airway, often associated with obstructive sleep apnea and various cardiometabolic problems. We offer oral appliances to address this issue, as well as appliances to alleviate TMJ pain and dysfunction.

Care that Supports Mouth and Body Health

Our integrative approach combines advanced dental procedures and technology with a holistic philosophy to provide care that is healthy to the mouth and body alike. We offer natural solutions and non-toxic, minimally invasive treatments that support the total health and well-being of patients of all ages.

We firmly believe that a healthy body cannot exist without a healthy mouth, and vice versa. Our goal is to assist you in achieving and maintaining both for a lifetime.
